Growing up, Tisha Hayes spent her summers working to help students with special needs. She later became a special education teacher in Southwest Virginia.

Now an associate professor in the UVA School of Education and Human Development, Professor Hayes is training educators to teach their young students a critical life skill that empowers and liberates: the ability to read.
