“The Lives Between The Lines”: Documentary

University Communication’s Multimedia department developed and produced a 50-minute documentary that uncovers the inspiration for and construction of the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at the University of Virginia.

Using interviews with UVA students, professors, Charlottesville community members and many descendants of the enslaved African Americans who built the University, “The Lives Between the Lines” illuminates the difficult history of an American institution and honors the legacy of the community in which it lives.

The film premiered at the 2022 Virginia Film Festival. It won “Best Virginia Film” at the 2023 Richmond International Film Festival.
